Thailand floods October 2011
· The massive monsoon floods in Thailand have shut down over 14,000 factories.
· 660.000 workers are out of work and the flooding have killed over 300 people.
· 60% of the worlds harddrives come from the flooded areas.
· Nidec in Thailand makes over 75% of all the spindle motors used in the HDD industry.
· This will lead to shortages and higher prices for hard disk drives and will cause problems for computer, consumer and enterprise storage customers well into 2012.
· As there are no harddrives coming into the market prices for what little is avalable has gone up over 100% and continues to rise.
