AMD has matched Intel's price cutting with a round of its own.
Leading the way, in percentage terms, are the 64-bit Opteron servers. The 8-way 800 models have been cut by as much as 40 per cent (the 844), with the 200 and 100 models also seeing cuts of up to a third. (Note that AMD's 32-bit server offerings have also seen cuts - the Athlon MP 2800+, 2600+ and 2400+ fall 12 per cent, to 201, 153 and 116, respectively.)
Of more interest to desktop users is the price falls for Athlon XP processors. The leading 3200 has been cut 30 per cent (from 464 to 325), and the 3000+ and 2800+ see reductions of 23 per cent, to 203 and 140, respectively
Last, but not least, AMD has introduced a new mobile processor, the Athlon XP-M 3000+. This is priced at $208 with the previous top-of-the-range 2800+ being cut 22 per cent, to $145. The other versions remain unchanged.
As always, all pricing is based on direct orders of 1,000 unit quantities.
